Social determinants of health (SDH) include forces, systems, and conditions that shape the environments in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age. Indeed, mitigating health inequities requires attention to their root causes and adjacent factors. SDH can have a greater effect on the quality of life and other health outcomes than healthcare spending or lifestyle choices alone. In this video, we summarize a comment that was recently published in the Lancet Digital Health Journal regarding the definition of social determinants of health and their research challenges.
